How to find your IP address on Windows

Find your IP address on Windows 11 and 10 in Settings or with one quick command.

Looking for the address websites see? That's your public IP, and it's on our home page. The steps below find your device's private address on your local network.

The quickest way: ipconfig

  1. Press the Windows key, type cmd, and open Command Prompt.
  2. Type ipconfig and press Enter.
  3. Under your active adapter (Wi-Fi or Ethernet), find IPv4 Address. Your router's address is listed as Default Gateway.

Windows 11 Settings

  1. Open Settings and select Network & internet.
  2. Select Wi-Fi or Ethernet, then your connection's properties (or Hardware properties).
  3. Find IPv4 address in the list.

Windows 10 Settings

  1. Open Settings and select Network & Internet.
  2. Select Properties under your current connection, or View hardware and connection properties.
  3. Find IPv4 address.

Get a new local IP address

In Command Prompt, run ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew. This asks your router for a fresh address and can fix some connection problems. It doesn't change your public IP.

Common questions

What's the difference between IPv4 Address and Default Gateway?

IPv4 Address is your computer's own address on the network. Default Gateway is your router's address, which you type into a browser to open its admin page.

Why does ipconfig show an address starting with 169.254?

Windows couldn't get an address from your router, so it gave itself a temporary one. Run ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew, or restart your router.

How do I set a static IP address on Windows 11?

Open Settings > Network & internet, select Wi-Fi or Ethernet and your connection's properties, then next to IP assignment click Edit and choose Manual.

How do I find my public IP on Windows?

Windows only shows your private address. Your public address, the one websites see, is on our home page.
