Check a family member's internet
Send a family member a link. They press one button, and you see how their internet is doing and what to tell them. No installs, and no IP address shared.
- Create a link and send it to the person you're helping, by text or chat.
- They tap it and press one button. Nothing to install, and nothing is shared until they press it.
- You see their results here, with plain advice on what to tell them.
How it works
You create a link and send it to a parent, grandparent, friend, or anyone whose internet you're trying to fix from a distance. When they open it, they see exactly what will be shared and press a button to run the check. A few seconds later you see how their connection is doing, what's wrong in plain words, and what to ask them to try.
If they try something, such as restarting the router, they can tap the same link again. You'll see whether the speed and stability improved, and by how much. One link works for up to three checks.
What they share, and what they don't
- Shared: download and upload speed, response time, whether the connection drops out, their internet provider's name, and whether they're on Wi-Fi or mobile data (when their browser says).
- Not shared: their IP address, their location, their name, anything about their device, or anything they do online.
Privacy and safety
- Private link. The link contains a long random code that only you and they have. Only the person who created it can read the results, because reading them needs a separate secret key that stays in your browser.
- Short-lived. A link stops working after 24 hours. Results are deleted 6 hours after the last check, and you can delete everything yourself at any time.
- Nothing hidden. We don't store anyone's IP address with a session, and the family member's page says what's shared before anything runs.
- Bot protection. Creating a link uses the same privacy-friendly security check as our contact form.
Good to know
- Results can take up to a minute to appear. Our free storage spreads updates across the world, so there can be a short delay between their check finishing and you seeing it.
- They need to be online to run it. If their internet is completely down, they can't open the link. In that case, a phone call and our connected but no internet guide are the best way to help.
- It measures, it doesn't fix. It can't see inside their router or change anything. It tells you where to look.
- Daily limit. To keep this free, only a limited number of links can be created each day. If you see that message, try again tomorrow.
