Most people who get hacked are tricked by a convincing message, not beaten by clever code. Scam texts and emails follow patterns, and spotting them is a skill you can practice. Each day brings a new set of four messages. Some are scams, some are genuine. Decide, then see the clues.
The five red flags to remember
- Urgency or threats: "within 24 hours," "account suspended."
- Lookalike addresses: a swapped letter, extra words, or an unusual ending. Read the address right before the first slash.
- Requests for money, codes, or passwords, especially small "fees."
- Surprises: prizes you didn't enter, refunds you didn't expect, a "new number" from family.
- Links where an app would do: when in doubt, open the company's app or type its address yourself.
All companies in the game are made up. Real scams copy real brands, so stay alert with names you trust too.
