192.168.1.1: router login and admin page

How to open 192.168.1.1, sign in to your router, and fix it when it won't load.

192.168.1.1 is the address many home routers use for their admin page, also called the default gateway. From there you can change your Wi-Fi name and password, see which devices are connected, and update the router's software.

Opens your router's admin page if you're connected to a router that uses this address.

This only works from inside your home network, not over mobile data.
  1. Connect to the router's network, either on its Wi-Fi or with a cable. The address only works from inside that network.
  2. Type http://192.168.1.1 into your browser's address bar, not the search box.
  3. Sign in with the admin username and password. They're usually printed on a label on the router, unless you changed them during setup.

Which routers use 192.168.1.1?

It's one of the most common router addresses. Linksys routers and many ASUS, Netgear, and TP-Link models use it, as do many routers supplied by internet providers. Some brands also offer a web address that reaches the same page, such as routerlogin.net (Netgear) or router.asus.com (ASUS). Newer ASUS routers may use 192.168.50.1 instead.

If 192.168.1.1 doesn't open anything, your router probably uses a different address, such as 192.168.0.1 or 10.0.0.1.

The page won't load

  • Check you typed it correctly. It's all numbers. A common mistake is typing a lowercase L instead of the number 1.
  • Make sure you're on the router's network. It won't work on mobile data or from another location.
  • Pause any VPN. Some VPNs block access to devices on your local network.
  • Find your router's real address. Your device lists it as "Router", "Gateway", or "Default Gateway". See how on Windows, Mac, iPhone, or Android.

Forgot the password?

If you changed the admin password and can't remember it, you can reset the router to factory settings. Most routers have a small reset button; hold it down with a paperclip for around 10 seconds while the router is on. This erases all your settings, including your Wi-Fi name and password, so you'll need to set it up again.

Keep your router secure

  • Change the default admin password to something unique.
  • Install firmware updates when the admin page offers them, or turn on automatic updates.
  • Use WPA3 or WPA2 security for your Wi-Fi, never an open network.
192.168.1.1 is a private address, so it's not the address websites see. Your public address is on our home page.
