IP address checker and converter

See whether an IP is private or public, and convert it to binary, hex, or a number.

Paste any IPv4 or IPv6 address to see what kind of address it is and how it's written in other formats. You can also paste a whole number, like 3232235777, to turn it back into a dotted IPv4 address.

Is it private or public?

Private addresses only work inside a local network, such as your home Wi-Fi. Public addresses are reachable across the internet. This tool also recognizes special ranges like loopback, link-local, carrier-grade NAT, multicast, and the ranges reserved for documentation. Our guide to public vs private IP addresses explains each one.

Why convert an IP address?

  • Binary shows exactly which bits a subnet mask covers, which helps when learning subnetting.
  • Hexadecimal appears in some logs, packet captures, and programming tools.
  • Whole numbers are how many databases store IPv4 addresses, because numbers are faster to sort and compare.

For IPv6, the tool shows both the short form most people use and the full form with every zero written out.
