ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT: how to fix it
ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT means a website took too long to answer. Find out whether it's the site or your connection, and how to fix it.
In short: the website didn't answer in time. Either the site is struggling or something is slowing or blocking your connection. Run our troubleshooter to test your connection.
What it means
Your browser waited for the website to respond and eventually gave up. This happens when a site is overloaded or down, when your connection is very slow or unstable, or when a firewall or proxy quietly blocks the request.
Common causes
- The website is down or overloaded.
- A very slow or unstable connection.
- A firewall, proxy, or VPN blocking the request.
- Outdated DNS pointing to an old server.
How to fix it
- Check whether the site is down for everyone with our status checker.
- Open other websites. If they're slow too, test your connection.
- Restart your router and modem. Unplug both for 30 seconds, plug in the modem first, then the router.
- Turn off your VPN, proxy, or ad-blocking extension for a moment and try again.
- Clear old name lookups. On Windows, open Command Prompt and run
ipconfig /flushdns. On a Mac, open Terminal and runsudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder. In Chrome, you can also visitchrome://net-internals/#dnsand click Clear host cache.
