ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR: how to fix it

ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR means a secure connection couldn't be set up. Fix your date and time, public Wi-Fi logins, antivirus settings, and more.

In short: your browser couldn't set up a secure (HTTPS) connection with the website. Run our troubleshooter to test your connection.

What it means

Secure websites and your browser agree on encryption before any page loads. This error means that handshake failed. Often the cause is on your side: the wrong date and time, a public Wi-Fi network waiting for you to log in, or security software interfering.

Common causes

  • Your device's date and time are wrong.
  • A public Wi-Fi network that wants you to log in first.
  • Antivirus software scanning secure connections.
  • An outdated browser, or a problem with the website's security setup.

How to fix it

  1. Check your date, time, and time zone are set automatically and correct.
  2. On public Wi-Fi, open a new tab and try any simple website to bring up the login page.
  3. Try a private window and update your browser.
  4. Pause your antivirus's HTTPS scanning briefly to test.
  5. Check whether the site is down for everyone with our status checker.

Still stuck? Our "Fix my internet" troubleshooter measures your connection and suggests the next step.
