ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED: how to fix it

ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED means the website's name couldn't be turned into an address. Here's why it happens and how to fix it on any device.

In short: the name lookup (DNS) for the website failed, so your browser couldn't find it. Run our troubleshooter to test your connection.

What it means

Your browser asked DNS to look up the website's address and didn't get a usable answer. Unlike NXDOMAIN, this can also happen when the DNS server doesn't respond at all, for example when your connection drops for a moment.

Common causes

  • A typo in the address.
  • Your connection or DNS server isn't responding.
  • Outdated name lookups stored on your device.
  • Router or provider DNS trouble.

How to fix it

  1. Check the address and reload.
  2. Open another website. If nothing loads, your internet connection is the problem, not the site.
  3. Clear old name lookups. On Windows, open Command Prompt and run ipconfig /flushdns. On a Mac, open Terminal and run sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder. In Chrome, you can also visit chrome://net-internals/#dns and click Clear host cache.
  4. Switch to a public DNS service such as 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8 in your device's or router's network settings.
  5. Restart your router and modem. Unplug both for 30 seconds, plug in the modem first, then the router.
  6. Turn off your VPN, proxy, or ad-blocking extension for a moment and try again.

Still stuck? Our "Fix my internet" troubleshooter measures your connection and suggests the next step.
